How to Start a Podcast
Podcasts are great for business and who better than Vanessa, our very own Pinterest Marketing Expert and co-creator of the Marketing and Mindset Podcast to vouch for it? Whether it’s in Clubhouse in front of a live audience or a more traditional podcast where your audience listens later, starting your own podcast is a great asset in business. Podcast Coach, Mahrukh Imtiaz, shines some light on how to start a podcast for your business.
First Step to Start a Podcast
Podcasts can attract your target audience to your business– but you need to get into podcasting for the right reason. Think about why you want to start a podcast, either by itself or relative to your business. People think that Podcasts will offer them a chance for fame and in setting unrealistic goals, they experience a “pod-fade” where they don’t get past creating content for Episode 7.
Podcasts are ways to express yourself. Always keep that in mind.
Do you have a story to share? Do you have something of value to share? Who can benefit from what you share? These are the questions to keep in mind and by doing so, you’ll stay in the game long-term. Networking, collaborations, socializing–all those things come into play later on.
Have fun with it! Your energy is felt and heard! This is not a “get rich overnight” scheme! Be consistent and keep putting in the hard work.
Why You Should Start a Podcast
Podcasts are a great way to connect to your audience by expressing your thoughts. As Mahrukh mentioned, starting a podcast is something she never thought of until she realized how much she loved talking to people.
Starting a podcast is also a great avenue to repurpose content. Taking an episode, making it a YouTube video, Pinterest Pin, a Reel on Instagram, etc. gives you a chance to reach more people on various platforms. This expands your reach as well as gives Google the chance to rank your content so that it reaches more people through their search results.
The Format of the Podcast Doesn’t Matter!
The format of the show, whether you have a guest or multiple people on the show, it’s dependent on what your audience likes. It’s more about the energy you put into each podcast episode – and how you work with other people.
Once you find something you love doing, the audience will know!
But a word of advice, try experimenting and change it up, to see what your audience prefers. Don’t be afraid of doing something new! Choose a topic you love because at the end of the day, it’s about self-expression!
Start with recording yourself so you can listen to yourself to get over any anxiety and nerves you have about starting a podcast. For example, send your friends voice notes about your day. Once you’re comfortable with it, start posting but don’t share it with others at first. Later on, when you’re confident, start sharing your links with others!
Do You Need to Niche Down to Start a Podcast?
You are your niche! You are different from the rest because podcasts are about expressing yourself, your opinions, your likes, and dislikes! You can begin by being a generalist and learn about what you enjoy talking about. It’s not always necessary, to begin with your business idea. Maybe you might enjoy talking about something else instead – and that is ok!
Once you understand what drives you and your business, you can delve into those topics and experiment with what you like talking about.
For example, Mahrukh loves cricket and while she played for Team Canada, she realized that it’s not something that she enjoyed talking about. Instead, her focus shifted elsewhere, like content creators, content creation, etc.
Always remember, starting a podcast isn’t difficult. It’s important to understand why you want to do it and what you’re passionate about. Your energy and love for what you do will always shine through and your audience will find you based on that. Stay true to yourself and your thoughts and you will be successful!
